Place and document words first
At airports, prioritize place and document words: gate, luggage, passport.
Ask locations with 在哪儿
Use “……在哪儿?” for gate, exit, and restroom.
行李 already means luggage
“行李” generally means luggage, not only suitcase.
Learn three airport keywords first
Airport Mandarin does not need to start with many complex words. Learn “登机口”, “行李”, and “护照” first for directions, luggage, and document checks.
For locations, keep using “在哪儿?”: Where is the gate, exit, or restroom? One pattern covers many airport needs.
Words for check-in, security, and checked bags
Inside the airport the flow is roughly: 值机 (check-in, get the boarding pass) → 托运行李 (check bags) → 安检 (security) → 登机 (boarding). Key words: 值机柜台 (check-in counter), 登机牌 (boarding pass), 托运 (check), 手提行李 (carry-on), 安检 (security).
To get your boarding pass, say “我要办理登机”; for a large bag ask “这个可以托运吗?”; what you carry onboard is “手提行李”.
Understand announcements and signs
Airport announcements and screens often show 登机 (boarding), 延误 (delay), 取消 (cancel), and 改签 (change flight). When you hear your flight number plus “登机”, head to the gate.
Signs commonly read “出发/Departures”, “到达/Arrivals”, “安检/Security”, and “行李提取/Baggage claim”. Recognizing these few words lets you navigate on your own.
How to start when there is a problem
If your luggage does not arrive, start with “我的行李不见了”. It is not the whole complaint process, but it tells staff you need help.
If announcements or counter explanations are too fast, say “请说慢一点” or “可以写下来吗?” In airport stress, short lines are most reliable.
A full airport dialogue (read along)
You: 你好,我要办理登机,这是我的护照. Agent: 好的,有行李托运吗? You: 有一个,这个可以托运吗? Agent: 可以. You: 登机口在哪儿? Agent: 在 12 号登机口,三点开始登机.
Listen once, then repeat line by line. Swap “登机口在哪儿” for “洗手间在哪儿” or “出口在哪儿”, and “托运” for “手提”, to cover everything from check-in to boarding.
Learn airport Mandarin by process
Airport vocabulary is large, so do not memorize it as a word list. Learn by process: check-in, checked luggage, security, gate, delay, baggage claim. Keep only two or three likely speaking lines for each step.
When listening to announcements, catch keywords: flight number, gate, delay, boarding. You do not need the whole sentence first; match screen information with the words you hear.
A 5-minute review route
Minute one is only for the core lines: “登机口在哪儿?”、“我要办理登机。”、“这是我的护照。”. Do not add new vocabulary yet; first make sure you can read the characters aloud and turn the English meaning back into Mandarin.
Minutes two to four change one real variable: place, quantity, time, person, or preference. In the final minute, close the page and say the idea with your own details. PandaKiko treats this guide as learned only when you can turn “登机口在哪儿?” into your own sentence.
