Use “在哪儿” for location

“在哪儿?” is one of the most common ways to ask where something is. Put the place before it.

For example, “洗手间在哪儿?” and “酒店在哪儿?” are both natural.

What to say when speech is too fast

If someone speaks too quickly, say “请说慢一点”. It is one of the most useful survival phrases.

In practice, you can ask Kiko to reply with slower, simpler Mandarin.

Ask location before the full route

For beginners, “地铁站在哪儿?” is easier than asking for a complex route. The other person may point or answer with “在那边” or “往前走”.

If you already have a destination on your phone, say “怎么去这里?” and show the screen. You do not need to pronounce the full address immediately.

Common answers to listen for

“一直走” means go straight, “往左走” means go left, and “往右走” means go right. “在前面” and “在那边” are also common.

Do not try to catch every word at first. Listen for the place word and the direction word. That is often enough to take the next step.

Ask for key places first

Beginners do not need to understand a full route immediately. Start with key places like subway station, hotel, restroom, or exit.

If the directions are too complex, ask “可以写一下吗?” or “可以指一下吗?” to reduce listening pressure.

Use map apps and common place words

In China, many people navigate with Amap (高德地图) or Baidu Maps (百度地图). If you already set the destination in the app, just say “怎么去这里?” and show your phone — faster than reading an address aloud.

Learn one set of place words and you are covered: 地铁站 (subway), 公交站 (bus stop), 出口 (exit), 洗手间 (restroom), 电梯 (elevator), 扶梯 (escalator), 红绿灯 (traffic light), 路口 (intersection). Drop them into “……在哪儿?” to ask for most places.

Mini dialogue

You: 你好,地铁站在哪儿? Local: 往前走,然后往右. You: 远吗? Local: 不远,走五分钟. You: 谢谢!

After this feels easy, replace “地铁站” with “洗手间”, “酒店”, or “出口” to cover more travel situations.

Ask for the big direction before details

Beginners often make direction questions too long. Start with “地铁站在哪儿?” or “这个地方怎么走?”, then ask “远吗?” or “走路几分钟?” after the person points you in the right direction.

If you cannot understand the full reply, catch keywords first: 左边, 右边, 前面, 过马路, 一直走. PandaKiko's order is direction words first, verbs second, full route last.

A 5-minute review route

Minute one is only for the core lines: “地铁站在哪儿?”、“怎么去这里?”、“远吗?”. Do not add new vocabulary yet; first make sure you can read the characters aloud and turn the English meaning back into Mandarin.

Minutes two to four change one real variable: place, quantity, time, person, or preference. In the final minute, close the page and say the idea with your own details. PandaKiko treats this guide as learned only when you can turn “地铁站在哪儿?” into your own sentence.

FAQ

Are “哪儿” and “哪里” the same?

Yes. Both mean where. “哪儿” is very conversational, while “哪里” is also common.

What is the first direction phrase I should learn?

Learn “……在哪儿?” first. Put a place before it and you can ask for many locations.

What is the difference between “怎么去” and “在哪儿”?

“在哪儿” asks where a place is. “怎么去” asks how to get there. For nearby places, “在哪儿” is usually simpler.

What should I do if I cannot understand the route?

Say “请说慢一点”, “可以指一下吗?”, or “可以写一下吗?”. These phrases reduce listening pressure.

Do people in China navigate with apps?

Very much so. Amap and Baidu Maps are the main ones. Set the destination, then say “怎么去这里?” and show your phone.

What is the difference between “往左走” and “左边”?

“往左走” is the action (go left), while “左边” is the position (the left side). “在左边” means the thing is on your left.
