Keep your first intro short

Beginners can start with three things: your name, where you are from, and something you like.

The patterns “我是……” and “我喜欢……” are common and easy to expand.

Use a simple follow-up

After introducing yourself, ask “你呢?” to keep the conversation going.

Kiko can respond in simple Mandarin and help you build a complete sentence step by step.

Name, country, and interest

For a first meeting, Mandarin introductions usually work best when you start with your name, then where you are from, then one light personal detail.

Use “我叫 Alex。我是美国人。我喜欢音乐。” as the base version. Later, add “我现在住在纽约” or “我正在学中文”.

Using an English name in Mandarin

You can put an English name directly after “我叫”. “我叫 Alex” and “我叫 Maria” both sound natural.

If you have a Chinese name, add “我的中文名字是安娜”. This works well in class, language exchange, and casual first meetings.

Expand into a real conversation

Once you can say your name, nationality, and one interest, add work, city, or why you are learning Mandarin.

Add one new sentence at a time. In real conversation, a short natural intro is better than a memorized paragraph.

What Chinese people often ask when they meet you

As a foreigner, the first time you chat with Chinese friends you will often be asked: “你从哪儿来?” (where are you from), “你来多久了?” (how long have you been here), “你会说中文吗?” (do you speak Chinese), and “你喜欢中国菜吗?” (do you like Chinese food). Sometimes even “你会用筷子吗?” (can you use chopsticks).

These are usually friendly curiosity, so relax. Answer with patterns you already know: “我从美国来”, “我来两个星期”, “我在学中文”, “我很喜欢中国菜”.

Mini dialogue

You: 你好,我叫 Alex. Other person: 你好,你是哪国人? You: 我是美国人. Other person: 你喜欢什么? You: 我喜欢音乐。你呢?

Every line is short, but the exchange already feels like a real introduction. Practice the pauses, not only the words.

Build a 20-second introduction

PandaKiko recommends a 20-second version first: name, where you are from, what you do now, and why you study Chinese. Do not begin with a long biography; short, clear, and easy to follow up is better for real conversation.

Leave one conversation hook on purpose, such as “我喜欢中国菜” or “我在上海工作”. The other person can naturally ask “你喜欢什么菜?” or “你来多久了?”, and your self-introduction turns into dialogue.

A 5-minute review route

Minute one is only for the core lines: “我叫 Alex。”、“你叫什么名字?”、“我是美国人。”. Do not add new vocabulary yet; first make sure you can read the characters aloud and turn the English meaning back into Mandarin.

Minutes two to four change one real variable: place, quantity, time, person, or preference. In the final minute, close the page and say the idea with your own details. PandaKiko treats this guide as learned only when you can turn “我叫 Alex。” into your own sentence.

FAQ
