Ask location first, then how to buy
Supermarket talk is about three things: where items are, whether you want a bag, and how you pay. Master these short lines and you are covered.
Drill swapping items into “在哪个货架”
Use “……在哪个货架?” with milk, eggs, bread, and bottled water.
刷卡 and 扫码 are different things
“刷卡” means pay by card; “扫码” means scan a QR code. In Chinese supermarkets, QR payment is far more common than cards.
How to ask where items are
If you cannot find something in a supermarket, the easiest question is “这个在哪里?” You can show a picture, shopping list, or translation and use this line. For a more specific ask, say “牛奶在哪个货架?” (Which shelf is the milk on?)
If you know the item name, replace “这个” with the item: “鸡蛋在哪里?”, “矿泉水在哪里?”, or “面包在哪里?” Staff often answer with “在最里面” (at the back) or “左边第二排” (second aisle on the left) — catching the direction word is enough.
Weighing produce: a uniquely Chinese step
In Chinese supermarkets, fruit, vegetables, and bulk food often need to be weighed. Some stores have a weighing counter in the produce area where staff weigh your bag and stick a price label on it before checkout; others weigh at the register. When unsure, ask “水果要先称一下吗?”
If you hear “去那边称一下” (go weigh it over there), take your bag to the weighing counter. Hand it to the staff and they will label it for you.
Checkout: bags, membership, payment
Cashiers fire off three quick questions: “有会员吗?” (Are you a member?), “要袋子吗?” (Do you want a bag?), and “怎么付?” (How will you pay?). Prepare short answers: “没有会员”, “要一个袋子”, “我用手机扫码”. Plastic bags are charged by law — usually a few mao — so “袋子要钱吗?” settles it.
Many supermarkets have self-checkout machines: scan the barcodes, then pay with an Alipay or WeChat QR code. The screens are usually Chinese-only; if you get stuck, say “可以帮我一下吗?” — an attendant is normally nearby.
A full supermarket dialogue (read along)
You: 你好,牛奶在哪个货架? Staff: 在最里面,左边. You: 谢谢。水果要先称一下吗? Staff: 不用,收银台会称. Cashier: 有会员吗? You: 没有. Cashier: 要袋子吗? You: 要一个袋子,袋子要钱吗? Cashier: 三毛. You: 好,我用手机扫码.
Listen once, then repeat line by line. Swap “牛奶” for “鸡蛋” or “面包”, and “扫码” for “刷卡” or “现金”, and you cover most supermarket runs.
Cover weighing and bags, not only price
Supermarket Mandarin is not only “多少钱”. You may deal with weighing produce, scanning, self-checkout, and bags. “这个要称重吗?” and “要一个袋子” are often more useful than more product names.
If you cannot find something, ask “请问牛奶在哪儿?” and listen for floor, section, or direction words. In large supermarkets, staff replies are usually short; catching “前面”, “左边”, or “那边” is enough to move.
A 5-minute review route
Minute one is only for the core lines: “这个在哪里?”、“牛奶在哪个货架?”、“水果要先称一下吗?”. Do not add new vocabulary yet; first make sure you can read the characters aloud and turn the English meaning back into Mandarin.
Minutes two to four change one real variable: place, quantity, time, person, or preference. In the final minute, close the page and say the idea with your own details. PandaKiko treats this guide as learned only when you can turn “这个在哪里?” into your own sentence.
FAQ
How do I say bag, and do bags cost money?
Bag is “袋子”. Plastic bags are charged by law in China, usually 0.3–1 yuan. Say “我要一个袋子” at checkout.
Can I use “这个” to point at things?
Yes. When you do not know the item name, pointing and saying “这个” works very well.
Do I weigh fruit myself?
It depends on the store. Some weigh and label produce at a counter in the produce area; others weigh at the register. Ask “水果要先称一下吗?”
Are self-checkout machines usable?
Yes — scan barcodes, then pay via Alipay or WeChat QR. Screens are usually Chinese-only; say “可以帮我一下吗?” if stuck.
What does “有会员吗” mean?
The cashier is asking if you have a membership card. “没有” is a perfectly fine answer.
Is 小票 the same as 发票?
No. “小票” is the shopping receipt; “发票” is an official tax invoice. For the receipt, say “请给我小票”.
