How to use this pattern
Color words often use “颜色 + 的” before an item, such as “红色的包”.
Practice routine
Look around and describe objects with “这是……色的”.
Common mistake
“好看” can describe colors, clothes, and photos, not only people.
How colors modify nouns
In Mandarin, colors often come before nouns with “的”: 红色的包, 黑色的衣服, 蓝色的车. Beginners should keep “的” at first.
When pointing in a shop, you can also say “我要黑色的”. The noun after “的” is omitted, but the meaning is clear.
Ask about colors while shopping
The most useful shopping questions are “有黑色的吗?” and “有别的颜色吗?” These help more than memorizing many color words at once.
To comment on a color, say “这个颜色很好看”. For detail, say “这个蓝色很好看” or “红色的太亮了”.
A complete color-choice dialogue
Customer: 这件有黑色吗? Staff: 黑色没有了,有蓝色和灰色. Customer: 蓝色有点深,有浅一点的吗? Staff: 有,这件是浅蓝色. Customer: 很好看,我可以试一下吗?
The dialogue puts colors into a real shopping task: ask about availability, compare shade, then request a fitting. Replace 黑色 with white, green, or beige, and replace clothing with a cup, phone case, or bag to reuse the exchange.
Color + 的 can stand in for the noun
When both speakers know the object, 红色的, 大的, or 新的 can stand for the whole noun phrase. That is why 我要红色的那个 does not need to repeat 衣服. This is one of the most useful shopping uses of 的.
深 and 浅 describe a darker or lighter shade, as in 深蓝 and 浅蓝. 亮 and 暗 relate more to brightness. Start with 深一点 and 浅一点 instead of translating every English use of dark as 黑.
Run a color scan with nearby objects
Choose five objects in the room and say 这是白色的杯子 or 那是黑色的电脑. In round two, hide the noun and point while saying 我喜欢蓝色的 or 红色的太亮了.
In round three, have a partner ask 你要黑色的还是白色的? Answer and add a reason, such as 白色的比较好看. Color words, the 的 pattern, and comparisons now work together in one task.
Know the boundary between product color and describing people
Product colors can usually be stated directly. Describing a person's appearance requires more care because some Mandarin color words carry cultural associations and do not match every English use. Beginners should first apply colors to clothing, objects, signs, and rooms rather than translating English color idioms word for word.
Run an online-shopping simulation. One learner sees product photos, while the other has only a color and size list. The questioner must confirm with 有……色吗?, 是深的还是浅的?, and 我要……的那个 instead of using item numbers. Compare the final choices and identify which question prevented the most confusion.
A concrete completion check
Choose three objects of the same type and complete a constrained decision. You must ask for one unavailable color, compare a darker and lighter shade, omit a known noun with 的, and explain the final choice. Then have a partner deliberately hand you the wrong color and correct it with 不是这个,是浅一点的那个. Repeat with a product that uses subtle shades rather than basic red, blue, and black. If you can choose and repair the mistake without returning to English, the color vocabulary is functioning as communication rather than a memorized list.
