How to use this pattern

Hobby conversations are perfect for “喜欢 + verb/noun”.

Practice routine

Say three of your interests with “我喜欢……”.

Common mistake

Use 看 for movies and 听 for music.

Turn hobbies into full sentences

When talking about hobbies, do not only say a noun. Use “我喜欢 + verb/noun”, such as “我喜欢看电影” or “我喜欢听音乐”.

To keep the conversation going, ask “你呢?” or “你喜欢什么?” This sounds more natural than asking many questions at once.

Continue from shared interests

When the other person likes the same hobby, say “我也喜欢”. This short line naturally builds a shared topic.

Then add frequency or time, such as “我周末常常看电影” or “我每天听音乐”. This turns a single sentence into real conversation.

A complete hobbies dialogue

Friend: 你平时喜欢做什么? You: 我喜欢看书,也对摄影很感兴趣. Friend: 你常出去拍照吗? You: 周末有时间就去,有时候也去爬山. Friend: 我也喜欢拍照,下次一起去吧. You: 好啊!

The answer starts with 喜欢 + activity, adds frequency and timing, then turns a shared interest into an invitation. Replace reading, photography, and hiking with cooking, drawing, gaming, or visiting museums to build your own exchange.

喜欢做什么 is more conversational than asking for a hobby

你的爱好是什么? is grammatical and fits a form or classroom. In everyday talk, 你平时喜欢做什么? or 你周末一般干什么? is more common. Your reply can begin directly with 我喜欢 instead of the formal 我的爱好是.

喜欢 can take a noun or an action, as in 喜欢音乐 and 喜欢听音乐. 对……感兴趣 emphasizes an area of interest, such as 我对历史感兴趣, and does not necessarily mean you do an activity often.

Add frequency instead of only naming a hobby

Give every interest a frequency: 每天, 常常, 有时候, or 很少. Try 我每天看书半小时, 我有时候去游泳, and 最近很少玩游戏. The extra detail naturally creates follow-up questions.

In pair practice, one person must ask 你多久……一次? The other answers 每周两次 or 一个月一次. Finish by finding common ground and saying 我也喜欢 or 下次一起去吧.

Find common ground while respecting different preferences

In a real conversation, the other person may name a hobby you know nothing about. Instead of changing the subject, ask 你什么时候开始的?, 为什么喜欢?, or 需要什么装备? You can keep the exchange warm with 听起来很有意思 even when you do not participate. Curiosity is often more useful than having the same hobby.

Prepare three hobby cards: do often, want to try, and not interested in. After drawing one, you cannot stop at like or dislike. Add a frequency, a reason, and one follow-up. For example: 我很少看球,但是我想学游泳. 你一般在哪里游? This practices honest preferences instead of making every response artificially enthusiastic.

A concrete completion check

Prepare one real hobby, one activity you want to try, and one you do not enjoy. Give a reason and frequency for each, then prepare one follow-up for your partner. Check whether every sentence begins 我喜欢; replace some with 我常常……, 我对……感兴趣, and 我不太喜欢……. Finish by turning one shared interest into a specific but low-pressure invitation with a day or place, and check whether the other person is actually free to join you. If you can listen to a different preference, ask a genuine question, and respond without pretending to agree, you can handle the topic beyond a rehearsed self-introduction. Keep the invitation optional so the other person can decline comfortably.
