How to use this pattern

For work, use “我是……” for job title and “我在……” for workplace.

Practice routine

Swap job words: teacher, student, engineer, designer.

Common mistake

“上班” means go to work or be at work; “工作” means work or job.

Separate job and workplace

In Mandarin, introduce work in two short lines: job title with “我是工程师”, then workplace with “我在公司上班”. This is more stable than one long sentence.

If you are a student, use the same pattern: “我是学生” and “我在大学学习”. Start with simple identity sentences.

Talk about being busy

In small talk, people may ask “最近忙吗?” You can answer “最近工作很忙” or “还好,不太忙”. These answers sound more conversational than only saying a job title.

If you do not want to share your company or exact title, say “我做设计相关的工作” or “我在科技公司上班”. A general answer is natural.

A complete work small-talk dialogue

Coworker: 你做什么工作? You: 我是产品设计师,在一家科技公司上班. Coworker: 最近忙吗? You: 这周有点忙,下午还要开会. 你呢? Coworker: 我在家办公,时间比较灵活.

The reply gives a profession, a broad company type, and today's schedule. Replace 产品设计师 with your real role, or use a general line such as 我做教育相关的工作. You do not need to disclose an employer's name to practice naturally.

工作, 上班, and 办公 emphasize different things

工作 can be a noun or a verb. 上班 focuses on being at work or following a work schedule. 办公 focuses on carrying out office work. Compare 我有一份新工作, 我九点上班, and 我今天在家办公.

你在哪儿工作? asks about a workplace or location, while 你做什么工作? asks what kind of work you do. Hearing 哪儿 versus 什么 prevents an off-target answer. In a first meeting, a broad answer is enough unless you want to add detail.

Expand a job title into a daily schedule

Start with identity: 我是工程师. Add a place: 我在酒店上班. Then add a time or task: 我九点上班,下午要开会. Three short lines are easier to control and sound more conversational than one overloaded sentence.

For a role-play, one person asks 最近忙吗? and the other answers 很忙, 还好, or 这周不太忙. Add one reason, such as 有一个新项目 or 同事休假了. This moves job vocabulary into ordinary workplace small talk.

Separate a formal introduction from workplace small talk

An interview or meeting introduction can focus on responsibility: 我负责产品设计 or 我主要和工程团队合作. At a social gathering, 我做设计相关的工作 or 最近项目有点忙 gives the other person an easier conversational hook. If a job title is difficult to translate, explain the industry and one familiar task before attempting a long literal title.

Prepare three versions. The ten-second version gives only your role. The thirty-second version adds the organization type and responsibility. The one-minute version adds your schedule or a part of the work you enjoy. Have a partner call out formal or casual, choose the matching version immediately, and return the topic with 你呢?

A concrete completion check

Close the page and record forty seconds covering your role or student status, workplace, usual start time, and whether you have been busy. Listen back for four things only: whether 是 and 在 have separate jobs, whether 工作 and 上班 fit their contexts, whether the time is clear, and whether you leave one detail that invites a follow-up. Record a second version without making it longer. Improve the pauses, replace one vague word, and end by asking 你呢? If you can do that without reading, the topic is ready for real small talk.
